Vol. 297 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Defence Forces Reorganisation.

12.

asked the Minister for Defence if the reorganisation of the Defence Forces has been investigated; the decision in the case of (i) the PDF (ii) the 1st Line Reserve (iii) the 2nd Line (iv) the Naval Service and (v) the Air Corps, and if he will indicate the proposed changes of command structures.

The role, functions and numerical establishments of the Defence Forces are under constant review. To meet the needs of the security situation the establishments of the Permanent Defence Force including the Air Corps and the Naval Service have been increased significantly within the past five years. Further changes will be implemented as necessary.

A major study of the land forces, including the FCA, was undertaken some time ago. I am not yet in a position to say what organisational changes, if any, will arise from this study.
