Vol. 297 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Fishguard-Waterford Steamer Service.

21.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power if he is aware of the recent announcement of a decision by British Rail to discontinue the steamer service between Fishguard and Waterford in February, 1978; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

, Cavan): I have seen Press reports concerning the announcement referred to by the Deputy. The provision and maintenance of a particular shipping service is a matter for the commercial interests concerned and, while I am anxious to ensure the overall adequacy of the shipping services available to importers and exporters, I have no powers to ensure the continuance of any particular service.

Is the Minister aware that there was a special section inserted in the Fishguard and Rosslare Railway and Harbours Bill in the House of Commons on 3rd May, 1898, whereby the maintenance of the line between Waterford and Fishguard was guaranteed by the company at that time, the Great Western Railway Company, now succeeded by British Rail? Is the Minister aware of that section in that particular Act?

(Cavan): In reply to the Deputy, I am aware of section 70 (1) of the Fishguard and Rosslare Railway and Harbours Act, 1898.

Since the Minister is aware of the fact does he intend to take up this matter with his opposite number in the House of Commons in an effort to ensure the line remains operational?

(Cavan): It is my opinion no useful purpose would be served by discussing the section referred to by the Deputy.

Would the Minister not think it worth having a try because of this particular section? The matter should be taken up in an effort to keep the line operational.

(Cavan): I am very anxious that adequate shipping services should be made available to our exporters and importers. The Deputy may take it that Government policy and my energies will be bent in that direction.

I understood the Minister to say that he was aware of Press reports regarding the closure of this line. Is he aware that a particular company have written to the Mayor and his colleagues on Waterford Corporation stating that the line would be closed in February, 1978? They have put that in writing.

(Cavan): I am not aware of that correspondence with the Mayor of Waterford.

Would the Minister consider it advisable to elaborate on his reasons for saying that he does not think any useful purpose would be served by pursuing the section Deputy Barrett referred to? The Minister will note I asked him if he would consider it advisable; I am leaving him an option.

(Cavan): In reply to the Deputy I should like to state that he and I speak, and understand the same language. It is best to leave the matter at that.

Question No. 22 withdrawn.
