Vol. 298 No. 1

Written Answers. - Pupil/Teacher Ratio.

86.

asked the Minister for Education the formula and method used by his Department to calculate the appropriate pupil/ teacher ratio in a secondary school.

My Department does not determine the number of teachers which may be employed in a secondary school. The number of teachers to whom incremental salary may be paid is prescribed in the rules as follows:

Number of Recognised Pupils

Authorised Quota of Recognised Teachers

Less than 35

Not more than1

35-54

,,,,,, 2

55-74

,,,,,, 3

75-94

,,,,,, 4

and so on

and so on

In addition, incremental salary is paid to a principal, vice-principal and, in schools of 250 pupils or more, a qualified guidance teacher where such is employed.
