Vol. 299 No. 6

Written Answers. - Lump Sum Payment.

48.

asked the Minister for the Public Service if he will arrange payment of a lump sum to a person (name supplied) in County Offaly in respect of her late husband who was employed with the Office of Public Works.

The case to which the Deputy refers gives rise to a particular difficulty in that what is sought is the payment from public moneys of a death gratuity in respect of a person who died over a year after he had ceased to be employed by the Office of Public Works. Consideration of the matter involves reviewing the general issue of the State's liability for the payment of death benefit in cases of seasonal workers who die outside periods of seasonal employment.

I hope to be in a position to have the issues involved resolved fairly soon and I will communicate the outcome directly to the Deputy.
