Vol. 300 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cigarette and Alcohol Advertising.

27.

asked the Minister for Health if any new restrictions on the advertisement of cigarettes and alcohol are being considered.

I am at present, as part of my examination of the area of preventive medicine and health education generally, considering various initiatives for more effective controls on the advertising of cigarettes and alcohol.

Would the Minister say whether the possibility is being considered of introducing some form of restriction on smoking in places of public assembly, or parts of places of public assembly, as is done in some continental cities, as part of the innovations he may introduce? Secondly, has the Minister any view on the nature of alcohol advertising particularly on the national television network which appears to have a very insidious effect on the welfare of our young people? Has he any sympathetic proposal in relation to those two areas?

I find myself in very considerable agreement with the Deputy on both those points.
