asked the Taoiseach the percentage of total unemployed represented by the following age groups (a) 14-24 (b) 25-34 (c) 35-44 (d) 45-54 and (e) 55-64.

The most recent period for which reliable information of the kind requested by the Deputy is available is May, 1975, when the first sample Labour Force Survey was taken.

When will the next sample labour force survey be taken?

As conveyed in a reply last week, it is hoped to have the report issued at the beginning of next year.

asked the Taoiseach the number of persons in the labour force who are aged between 15 and 19 on the latest date for which complete figures or reasonable estimates are available.

The most recent period for which reliable information of the kind requested by the Deputy is available is May, 1975, when the first sample Labour Force Survey was taken. The estimates from that survey show that the labour force aged from 15 to 19 years at that time was 132,000; there were, in addition in that age group, some 16,200 persons seeking work for the first time.

Would the Parliamentary Secretary not accept that it is almost impossible to plan job creation programmes for young people if you do not know how many of them there are in the labour force?

If we had had a census two years ago we would have a better chance.
