Vol. 300 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Bank Raid Safeguards.

29.

asked the Minister for Justice if he considers that sufficient safeguards and security measures are taken by commercial banks with a view to cutting down on the frequency of bank raids; and if he has made or proposes to make any representations to the banks in the matter.

The security measures that are operated by the commercial banks are reviewed from time to time by the banks in consultation with the Garda authorities. I am aware that the Garda recently recommended certain additional measures and I hope the banks will find it possible to implement them fully.

Would the Minister agree there is some cause for special concern about the present situation and does the Minister hope to be able to bring about a very rapid improvement in that situation?

I agree there is certainly room for improvement in regard to the protection of banks.

And that the banks could do more than they have been doing?

I think the banks could and should be doing more than they have been doing.

Could the Minister give an outline of the security provisions?

No. Because of the security considerations involved I would not wish to publicise them. I am sorry but I am sure the Deputy will understand.

I suggest that a general description would not impair security and might help to get public support for them.

If I am in order I might point out that a bank in Listowel was I understand, robbed yesterday. I gather that two people got into the bank through a back window and were waiting for the bank staff when they came in. I should have thought that at least there would be a burgular alarm on any window where people could get in as easily as that. That is just a personal point of view.

I endorse the Minister's view.

I propose to see to it that the banks do their share by keeping their windows properly closed.
