Vol. 301 No. 1

Written Answers. - Motor Tyres.

419.

asked the Minister for Industry, Commerce and Energy if he is aware that motor tyres are being allowed into the country which, it is alleged, are not safe for use; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I have no information that there are currently on sale in this country tyres which are unsafe. A few years ago there was some concern and adverse publicity about foreign tyres of lower ply than was regarded as safe at certain speeds, being on the market. It appears that the sale of these tyres was discontinued but if the Deputy has any information that there is a problem I would be prepared to have the facts examined.

In view of the vital role that tyres of good standard play in safe driving, I should like to emphasise the necessity for the motoring public to ensure that reputable brands only are fitted to vehicles.
