Vol. 301 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Post-Primary School Numbers.

36.

asked the Minister for Education the maximum number of students permitted in a post-primary school; the optimum number of students he considers appropriate in a post-primary school; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

No directive has issued from my Department in regard to the maximum number of pupils permitted in a post-primary school.

It is considered that, in general, the maximum size of a school should not exceed 1,000 pupils. The optimum size would be related to the circumstances and location of the school—in particular, regard must be had to comparison of density of population in rural and urban areas. A school in the range of 400 to 800 pupils is suitable in most circumstances.
