Vol. 301 No. 9

Written Answers. - National Schools.

397.

asked the Minister for Education the current number of pupils at St. Laurence's National School, Kilmacud, County Dublin; the current pupil-teacher ratio for the school; the number of teachers employed; and if any response has been given to the parents' association concerning the possible loss of a teacher in the future.

The number of pupils enrolled at St. Laurence's national school, Kilmacud, on 30th September, 1977, was 602. This gives the school, which has a staff of 18 teachers, an overall pupil-teacher ratio of 33.5: 1. I am not aware of any impending vacancies on the staff of the school. I have a request from the Parents' Association to receive a deputation, "to discuss matters relating to primary school education". Such a deputation will be received at official level as soon as possible.

398.

asked the Minister for Education if, in relation to Kilbrittain national school, County Cork, he is aware that (a) there is a teacher with remedial qualifications on the staff, (b) no remedial tuition is being given, (c) the board of management is anxious to have remedial tuition carried on in the school where there is a number of pupils requiring this and (d) if he will take steps to ensure that the wishes of the board of management are observed.

Remedial education is primarily a matter for the child's class teacher and all national teachers are trained to deal with this aspect of their work.

All the staff in Kilbrittain national school are fully trained and, with an average class size of 28, any remedial education necessary should be well within their capability. The deployment of this staff is a matter for the board of management itself, but my Department's inspector will be available to furnish any advice or assistance the board may require.
