Vol. 302 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Cork Flooding.

38.

asked the Minister for Finance if he is aware of the serious flooding problems in Ballingeary and Inchigeela villages, County Cork; and when his Department will take steps to rectify the problem.

I am aware of the flooding problem in the Ballingeary and Inchigeela villages, County Cork.

Drainage works for these areas could only be considered in the context of a comprehensive drainage scheme under the Arterial Drainage Act, 1945. The possibilities of carrying out such a scheme for portion of the Upper Lee in which the areas in question are situated were investigated some years ago by way of engineering and valuation surveys and the scheme was found to be totally uneconomic. In addition it would interfere adversely with the scenic and amenity value of the area.
