Vol. 302 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Physiotherapist Statistics.

14.

asked the Minister for Health the number of physiotherapists in Ireland; the annual intake of physiotherapist students in each of the last five years; and if he is satisfied that the present level of student intake is sufficient to meet this country's requirements.

There are approximately 320 physiotherapists employed in health boards and voluntary hospitals in this country. I have no details in regard to the numbers employed in private hospitals or otherwise engaged in private practice but I understand that the numbers are not significant.

The annual intake of physiotheraphy students in each of the last five years has been: 1973, 44; 1974, 40; 1975, 45; 1976, 51; 1977, 49. This level of intake of students would appear to be adequate. I am, however, having the question of staffing levels examined and when that has been completed the adequacy and suitability of the training arrangements will be further assessed.

In that review and examination, would the Minister consider setting special standards for the institute?

Yes, that is also under consideration.
