Vol. 302 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Unemployment Statistics.

4.

asked the Taoiseach (a) if he will furnish estimates, from the best available sources, of the percentage of the total work force, including those never yet employed, at present unemployed, with the figure for the corresponding date in 1976; and (b) if he will give, from the best available sources, the corresponding figures for the other EEC member states.

The only source which provides information on employment and unemployment on a comparable basis for the EEC member states is the series of Community labour force surveys. The first such inquiry was carried out in this country in May 1975. The EEC report on that survey contains information on the percentages of the total work force—including those seeking regular work for the first time—who were recorded as unemployed in the different member states and, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, I propose to circulate in the Official Report a statement giving these ratios.

A further labour force survey was taken in the spring of this year and it is anticipated that the first results for Ireland will be available, at national level, during the first half of 1978.

Following is the statement:

1975 labour force survey. Percentage of the total work force who were unemployed (including persons seeking regular work for the first time).
