Vol. 303 No. 1

Written Answers. - Dún Laoghaire College of Art.

386.

asked the Minister for Education if he has received a request from Dún Laoghaire VEC to meet a deputation in connection with the future of the Dún Laoghaire College of Art; and if he will meet such a deputation in the near future.

388.

asked the Minister for Education if he will sanction third level courses at the School of Art, Dún Laoghaire, County Dublin; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

389.

Mr. Cosgrave

asked the Minister for Education the decision he has taken concerning the granting of third-level status to Dún Laoghaire School of Art.

With the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions 386, 388 and 389 together.

A request has been received from the Borough Vocational Education Committee in the following terms:—

that the Committee request recognition of the Art School as a separate entity and that it be accorded Second Level Status and that the Department be asked for a tripartite meeting in the Department consisting of Representatives of the Committee, the Art School and the National Council for Education Awards.

Arrangements are being made for such a meeting.

387.

asked the Minister for Education if the NCEA has considered the qualifications to be awarded by the Dun Laoghaire School of Art; and the recommendations, if any, they have made on this subject.

The position in this matter is that awards have been made over the past two years by the NCEA to students of Art at the Dún Laoghaire Technical Institute on the basis of the individual standards achieved by those students. The question of the recognition of courses, as such, has been submitted by VEC to the NCEA and is at present under consideration.
