NOTES: (1) The figures given above relate to numbers employed, permanent and temporary as distinct from actual established posts. The estimate of numbers expected to be employed on 1 January 1979, are of necessity very tentative, as these can be affected by various unforeseen factors, for example, unexpected vacancies and the creation of new posts, and so on.

(2) The figures in respect of the Department includes staff servicing An Bord Pleanála.

(3) The figures in respect of the numbers employed by local authorities are based on annual returns, related to the last day of the calendar year, in so far as received in my Department and on estimates based on existing trends.

(4) Indirect employment has been construed to mean employment on a contractual (including consultancy) basis. No figures for such employment are available in the Department in the case of local authorities. It is not possible to give figures for "spin-off" employment in relation to the "direct employment" figures given in the reply.

(5) Generally in the case of the "agencies", the figures shown are those supplied by these bodies.
