Vol. 303 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Glasnevin (Dublin) Cemetery.

20.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he has taken any initiative with regard to the condition of Glasnevin Cemetery, as suggested in his reply to Question 39 of 8 November 1977.

On 11 November 1977 I indicated to Dublin Corporation, as the sanitary authority and burial board for the area, my concern in this matter and stressed the importance of securing any necessary improvements in the maintenance of the cemetery.

I understand that inspections have been carried out by the corporation and that the condition of the cemetery has been the subject of correspondence between the corporation and the Dublin Cemeteries Committee, in the course of which reference has been made to financial, manpower and other problems which have complicated the problems of maintenance, particularly at this time of year. I am advised that the committee intend to aim all available resources at achieving satisfactory maintenance standards as soon as possible, and that the corporation will continue to carry out inspections to see that this is done.

Can the Minister give us any idea, because he must appreciate that this is very distressing for the relatives of the people.

A question without a statement, Deputy.

Could the Minister say if something will be done soon? The Minister talks about further inspections. When will they begin something? Surely there are plenty of unemployed in Dublin, and it is a relatively simple job. Why can they not get on with it?

I am advised that the committee intend to aim all available resources at achieving satisfactory maintenance.

Question No. 21.

That is meaningless.

I hope that they will get on with it. If they fail to do so, the matter can be taken up again.
