Vol. 304 No. 6

Written Answers. - Asbestos Dust Survey.

507.

asked the Minister for the Environment if the findings of the survey carried out by the EEC Commission on asbestos dust and its effects on man and the environment will be binding on all the Community States including Ireland.

A report on public health risks of exposure to asbestos was published by the commission in 1977. It was prepared by a working group of experts and included recommendations of a technical nature and suggestions, inter alia, for introduction of codes of practice and attention to risks.

Reports of this nature are published by the commission for information and/or as a basis for further study and have no legal status. It is open to the commission, arising from such reports, to make proposals for legislation which would be considered by the EEC Council, but no proposals have been submitted by the commission in relation to asbestos at this stage.
