Vol. 305 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Parks Responsibility.

20.

(Cavan-Monaghan) asked the Minister for Finance the national or other parks that are the responsibility of his Department.

The following are the parks: Killarney National Park, County Kerry, which includes the Bourn Vincent Memorial Park; Glenveagh National Park, County Donegal; Phoenix Park, Dublin; St. Stephen's Green, Dublin; St. Enda's, Dublin; Kilkenny Castle Parklands; Garnish Island, Glengarriff, County Cork; Derrynane Historic Park, County Kerry.

National parks are also being established in Connemara and in the Burren, County Clare.

(Cavan-Monaghan): Is it not true that quite a number of national parks are also under the control of the Department of Fisheries? Might I suggest that it would be a good thing to place all those parks under the one Department? I suggest that the correct Department to have control of these parks is the Department of Fisheries who have made such a wonderful job of the parks they have under their control. Will the Minister consider bringing the matter before the Government with a view to having one Department looking after all these parks?

Anything that would improve the situation will be considered.

(Cavan-Monaghan): I suggest that it is a waste of energy and effort to have as many as three Departments looking after them.

I am sure the Deputy would not suggest that the Office of Public Works have been remiss or negligent.

(Cavan-Monaghan): I am suggesting a duplication of effort and that the Department of Fisheries have a magnificent record to their credit.

I agree.
