Vol. 305 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - National Gallery Working Conditions.

23.

asked the Minister for Finance the improvements that are proposed in respect of the heating conditions and general working conditions in the National Gallery, which have been the subject of repeated representations on the part of the National Gallery Attendants' Association.

There have been complaints about a number of rooms in the National Gallery where new roof lights were installed recently. Work to eliminate the cause of those complaints has started and is expected to be completed in a couple of weeks.

Heating conditions generally in the gallery are kept under constant observation but they are, of course, affected by the conditions that exist outside. Every effort is made to maintain temperature and humidity levels which will prove satisfactory to the occupants of the building.

Might I ask the Minister to accept that, despite what he said earlier, arising out of my previous question concerning conditions here, I received a substantial volume of support from everybody, particularly from the association mentioned here, who drew attention to the fact that they have been suffering for years and nobody has done anything about it? May I take it from the Minister's reply that he accepts that the people working in the National Gallery have a serious problem and that he intends to ensure that it is rectified very soon?

They have a problem— I would not say a serious one—but the matter will be dealt with——

Very soon.

In the immediate near future.
