Vol. 305 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Roscommon/Portiuncula Hospitals.

29.

asked the Minister for Health the present development in regard to the federation of Roscommon/Portiuncula hospitals; and the future development that can be expected in this regard.

During discussions in my Department in January last, representatives of the Western Health Board, Portiuncula Hospital, Ballinasloe and Comhairle na nOspidéal, agreed to participate in further discussions under the chairmanship of my Department to consider the arrangements for the federation of the two hospitals. Two such meetings have been held—on 8 February and 10 March and a further meeting has been arranged for 10 April. I understand that good progress has been made in resolving some problems in relation to the arrangements for federation and that it was decided that 1 July 1978 should be aimed at for the commencement of federation.

Could the Minister say anything in relation to the development of the maternity services at the county hospital in Roscommon? There is serious disquiet about this matter. I am delighted to see Deputy Joan Burke taking an interest in this matter. But I should say that the federation made no progress in the last four-and-a-half years of the Coalition Government.

Could the Minister say when the appointment of the obstetrician-gynaecologist will be made for this hospital?

I am sorry, I did not hear the question.

Could the Minister state when the appointment of the obstetrician-gynaecologist will be sanctioned?

That is a separate question.

The whole question of the future of the maternity section of the hospital in Roscommon is under consideration at present and is part of the discussions taking place in regard to the federation. No final decisions have been taken as yet.

When may we expect developments in this respect?

I am sorry, I did not hear the Deputy.

Could the Minister say when we could expect developments in this respect?

It is hoped that discussions will be terminated and that the federation will come into effect on 1 July.
