Vol. 305 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Children Act.

48.

asked the Minister for Health if he has plans to amend the Children Act, 1908.

The Task Force on Child Care Services will consider the up-dating and modernisation of the law in relation to children. This is likely to lead to new legislation which will involve replacement or amendment of the Children Act, 1908.

Does the Minister consider that, in the light of changes which have taken place in other countries, the Act in question must be considered to be totally out of date and there is a degree of urgency involved in amending this legislation?

There is no doubt that we need a new Children Act. That a certainty.

Could the Minister indicate when we might have a Bill before the House?

I should not like to put any precise time on it, but I would hope it would not be more than 12 months before I receive the report.
