Vol. 305 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Hospital Facilities for Fathers.

23.

asked the Minister for Health if any facilities exist at public maternity hospitals for the presence of fathers at the birth of their babies.

There are no special facilities in public maternity hospitals to enable fathers to be present at the birth of their children, but some fathers attend at the birth, where circumstances permit.

Would the Minister consider again suggesting to these hospitals that this might be done, or does he approve it?

My personal opinion is not really relevant. I have my own personal opinion.

The Minister's opinion as Minister for Health is relevant. None of our personal opinions are important.

There are scarce resources and a lot of pressing needs. I would not afford it a high priority.
