Vol. 305 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Medical Cards.

14.

asked the Minister for Health if he is aware that medical cards are not available to children in care in some instance; and the action, if any, he intends to take on this matter.

Children in care are either boarded out with foster parents or maintained in residential homes or special residential schools. Children who are boarded out are provided with medical cards. In the case of children in residential care, however, the payments made on their behalf are designed to meet all their needs, including medical care. Hence they are not provided with medical cards. I do not propose to take any action in regard to this.
