asked the Minister for Social Welfare the average number of people on the live register of unemployed during October 1976 and October 1977; and the total amount paid per week to the unemployed out of public funds, including unemployment benefit, assistance, and payrelated benefit, during these two periods.

The average weekly number of people on the live register of unemployed during October 1976 was 108.520 and during October 1977 was 105.128. The total amount paid each week by way of unemployment benefit, unemployment assistance and pay-related benefit to those persons averaged £1,563,405 in October 1976 and £1,738,418 in October 1977.
