Vol. 305 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Communications with Russia.

11.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs why letters from Ireland are not getting through to the recipients in Russia.

(Dublin South-Central): I am not aware, nor have I received any complaints of failures in delivery to Russia. However, if the Deputy has details of any specific cases, I will be glad to have them investigated.

12.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs why it is not possible to dial direct by telephone to Russia when it is now possible to dial to most countries in the world.

(Dublin South-Central): Operators in the international exchange connect telephone calls to Russia for subscribers by dialling to that country. Owing to shortage of access circuits to Russia on the Continent, the service is subject to difficulties which make it necessary to defer consideration of direct subscriber dialling until sufficient circuits are available.

Can the Minister tell is when we will have direct dialling to Galway, Mayo and other points west?

(Dublin South-Central): You never know what might happen.

Can he assure the House we will get it before Russia?

(Dublin South-Central): He can.
