Vol. 305 No. 8

Ceisteann—Questions. Oral Answers. - Antibiotic Residues in Milk.

1.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if any standards, enforced by his Department, exist in relation to antibiotic residues in milk; and if any new proposals are contemplated.

There are no official regulations in relation to antibiotic residues in milk. As such residues arise from the use of antibiotics in animal husbandry this aspect of the matter is at present being examined by the Department in consultation with the Department of Health.

Is the Minister aware that under section 31 (1) of the 1924 Dairy Produce Act there is a law against the presence of contaminants in dairy products? Will the Minister state why this provision is not being enforced against antibiotics?

I am aware that there is such provision but I am also informed that the enforcement of this section is not easy because of the difference of opinion between the veterinary profession, farming organisations and so on. The matter is being investigated at the moment and I understand that these issues are being dealt with.

If the Minister were to introduce a regulation against the presence of antibiotics in milk—I think he would agree that from the national point of view this would be desirable —would it be necessary to introduce new legislation or could it be done by order?

If it is found necessary for new legislation to be introduced that will certainly be done. The position is being examined at present by a council working party and it would, I think, be better to wait for their report before we commit ourselves.

That is not the question I asked. I asked if it were necessary to do something—I think it will be and I think the Minister agrees with me—could he do it by order or must he introduce legislation?

I am not quite sure, but if it is necessary to introduce legislation I am sure that will be done.

Could the Minister find out and let me know?

Yes, certainly.
