Vol. 305 No. 10

Written Answers. - Sligo Harbour Dredging.

273.

asked the Minister for Tourism and Transport if he is aware that money was sanctioned in June 1977 for the dredging of Sligo harbour; that in recent times ships have been grounded on entering Sligo port; that shipping companies are not prepared to renew contracts if dredging is not carried out as a matter of urgency; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I have been advised that in recent times ships have had difficulties entering Sligo harbour because of siltation. I am aware that my predecessor indicated on 4 July 1977, that he would be prepared, subject to technical clearance, to recommend the making available of a grant for dredging at Sligo harbour.

It was necessary to obtain additional financial information from the Sligo Harbour Commissioners to permit of full examination of the proposal, and the supply of that information was not completed until last week. I will now endeavour to give an early decision on the question of a grant.
