Vol. 305 No. 10

Written Answers. - Sport Participation with South Africa.

300.

asked the Minister for Education if he has given any direction to the sports council regarding the question of Irish teams or individuals participating with individuals or teams from South Africa who support the apartheid position of that country with regard to sport.

301.

asked the Minister for Education whether the recent grants announced by his Department to sporting organisations were conditional on none of the organisations in question participating in fixtures, competitions or individual sporting events which would have included racially segregated teams from South Africa.

302.

asked the Minister for Education the action he has taken to ensure that sporting associations in Ireland, which are in receipt of Government funds, do not participate in sporting events with racially segregated teams from South Africa.

With the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 300, 301 and 302 together. Cospóir are aware of the Government's policy regarding the question of Irish teams or individuals participating with individuals or teams from South Africa. The council will be co-operating as appropriate with other countries and organisations in the interests of sport including the implementation of the United Nations general policy on apartheid in sport—which policy the Government fully supports.

The normal conditions attached to the awarding of grants to sports bodies under my Department's scheme of aid to sport is that the money be spent in the areas of coaching, administration and equipment only.

As for my Department's attitude towards grant-aided bodies taking part in sport with a racially selected team from South Africa, all of these bodies have been advised of the Government's policy of support of the United Nations resolutions on apartheid in sport.
