Vol. 306 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Post-Primary Examination Board.

12.

asked the Minister for Education if he intends to proceed with the establishment of an independent examinations board which will have responsibilities in respect of examinations in the post-primary sector; if such a board will also determine the curricula in the various subjects; and if he will make a comprehensive statement on the matter.

This matter is under consideration and a statement in regard to it will be made as soon as possible.

Could the Minister say when this statement will be made?

I am afraid I could not.

Could the Minister not say even in the broadest context? Will it be this year, before summer or before Christmas?

(Interruptions.)

I have not the remotest idea. I am trying to be helpful and consequently snide remarks are no help to me. This is something I inherited. I was told in the Dáil that a Bill was ready on this matter on 25 November 1976. I have not got a copy of the Bill. I do not know if it has disappeared. The previous Government were supposed to have had a Bill ready on the matter. I am not treating it as a matter of urgency. At the moment it is not one of my priorities.

Could I direct the Minister's attention to the part of the question which asks him if he intends to proceed with the establishment of such a board? Would he now tell the House, regardless of the timetable, if he is committed to such an idea or not?

I have not made up my mind on this.

Is the Minister aware that a Bill existed?

Yes, according to my notes.
