Vol. 306 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Drug Addiction Unit.

23.

asked the Minister for Health if he was informed of the closing of the Drug Addiction Unit attached to Dundrum Mental Hospital, Dublin; if he is aware that the treatment of patients has been discontinued as a result; if he intends to have this unit reopened as a matter of urgency; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I was informed of the temporary closing of the unit. I understand from the Eastern Health Board that satisfactory arrangements have been made for the treatment of patients elsewhere and that their well-being is not affected by these alternative arrangements.

The health board states that the closing of the unit arose from staff problems. The issues involved are at present the subject of discussion between the board and the unions involved. The board is seeking to have these issues resolved as quickly as possible. I will keep the position under review.
