Vol. 306 No. 7

Written Answers. - Closure of County Cork Firm.

155.

asked the Minister for Labour if his Department will take steps to prevent the closure of Newmarket Fashions, County Cork, on 30 June 1978; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I have been in touch with my colleague, the Minister for Industry, Commerce and Energy, and am aware through him that the IDA are taking what steps they can to preserve the jobs of the workers employed in Newmarket Fashions.

So far as my own Department is concerned, contact has been made with the parent company in the matter and the possibility of assistance under the Employment Maintenance Scheme which was mentioned by the Minister for Finance in his budget statement has been brought to their attention. A draft of the scheme is at present with the EEC authorities for their consideration and approval. It is proposed that the scheme should have effect from 3 April 1978 and that first payments would be made in July.
