Vol. 306 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions . Oral Answers . - Disability Benefit Appeals .

22.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he has completed his examination of the delays which occur in hearing appeals against decisions disallowing disability benefit; and, if so, the outcome.

: The causes of delays in having appeals heard against decisions disallowing claims to disability benefit have been examined in my Department and steps have been taken to rectify the position including the assignment of an additional appeals officer. Examination of the current position shows that appeals are now being decided with a minimum of delay.

: Can the Minister give us an idea of the period that is now involved?

: I would be delighted to do so. At the beginning of January this year there were 200 cases outstanding and on 5 May 1978 there were only 21.

: The Minister has done something at last. I am glad we raised the matter.

: I, too, am glad that the Deputy raised it. Please keep out ting down questions of that nature.
