Vol. 306 No. 10

Written Answers. - Medical Card Scheme.

100.

asked the Minister for Health if he has any proposals to exclude social welfare benefit from assessment for eligibility for health benefits under the Medical Card Scheme.

A person is entitled to a medical card if, in the opinion of the chief executive officer of the health board, he is unable, without undue hardship, to arrange general practitioner services for himself and his dependants. In order to determine eligibility, a person's total financial circumstances, including income from social welfare benefits, must be taken into account.

I have no proposals to exclude social welfare benefits in assessing eligibility for a medical card.
