Vol. 307 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions . Oral Answers . - Loughan House Detention Centre .

16.

asked the Minister for Education the number of educational posts which have been advertised for Loughan House detention centre; the number of replies received; and the number of appointments made.

: Teachers in second level schools under vocational education committees are appointed to the staff of the committee and not to individual schools. The assignment of teachers to particular schools is a responsibility of the committee and is related to the requirements of the situation from time to time.

I may add that it is not the practice of the Department of Education to require committees to furnish information in relation to the number of applications received in response to individual advertisements for teachers. I may state, however, that as far as I am aware no applications were received in connection with an advertisement for teachers for appointment by the committee in art, music and physical education which had reference to teaching service in Loughan House.

: Was an indication given to the Minister of the number of teachers being sought in respect of these subjects?

: I have not got that information but I will get it for the Deputy if he requires.
