Vol. 307 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions . Oral Answers . - Domestic Gas Subsidy .

14.

asked the Minister for Industry, Commerce and Energy if it is the policy of the Government to maintain subsidies on domestic gas for an indefinite period; and, if not, when they are likely to be withdrawn.

: Because of my concern about the future of the town gas industry, I have, as I announced recently, arranged for a review of its operations. The review will cover, inter alia, the issue of State subsidy to the industry. The group carrying out the review have already commenced their work.

I must add that there is no guarantee that the subsidy will be continued for an indefinite period. In common with other subsidies, its continuation will be considered periodically in the light of the prevailing economic circumstances and of budgetary considerations.
