Vol. 307 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions . Oral Answers . - South-West Cork Industrial Development .

7.

asked the Minister for Industry, Commerce and Energy the IDA proposals for the provision of advance factories and industrial development generally in south-west Cork.

: I would refer the Deputy to the information which I gave to the House on 8 June in response to a Question by Deputy Walsh regarding industrial development in a number of towns in south west Cork. I understand from the Industrial Development Authority that this represents a comprehensive summary of current plans for industrial development in south-west Cork.

: Did the reply to the question on 8 June contain details of proposals for advance factories in south Cork? My recollection is that it did not.

: There have been quite a number of questions on this topic and I am trying to find the reply to the one on 8 June. Yes, it did.

: What are the proposals in question for advance factories?

: The advance factories mentioned here are a 15,000 square feet cluster of five units for small industries in Dunmanway and there are various other projects of proposed factories to be built. One is at Dunderrow near Kinsale, and also the authority were actively seeking to secure a replacement project for the Jacobson factory in Bandon and seeking a suitable industrial site in Bantry.

: Being aware of the figures in the reply relative to Kinsale, which involves a new undertaking, and Bandon, which involves a factory that closed down and which has an existing premises, I was more interested in proposals for further advance factories in west Cork as indicated in my question.

: A question, Deputy.

: Is the Minister aware that the recent figures given in reply to a Parliamentary Question indicate an increase in unemployment in west Cork over the figures for the previous year? On that basis would he accept that there is need for a further industrial drive in particular by way of provision of more advance factories in west Cork?

: The only increases in unemployment in west Cork appear to be at Kinsale where there was an increase of 33 and in Bandon the increase was seven. In seven other locations there was a decrease.

: The overall figures showed an overall increase. I am referring to a reply to a question which I recently got from the Minister for Labour.

: These figures would appear to indicate a fairly sizeable decrease.

: Could I ask the Minister to furnish those details to me in written form? They conflict with details I got recently from the Minister for Labour.

: The figures are available. They are the live register figures from the various offices.
