Vol. 307 No. 8

Written Answers . - Aughinish (Limerick) Alumina Project .

114.

asked the Minister for Industry, Commerce and Energy the estimated proportion of output of the new Alcan development in County Limerick, which will be exported; and if such exports will qualify for tax relief; and the nature and extent of any such relief.

: I am informed by the Industrial Development Authority that the total output of alumina from the Aughinish Alumina Project will be for export. I am advised that exports of manufactured goods qualify for exports tax relief subject to compliance with the conditions set out in Part IV of the Corporation Tax Act 1976. "Manufactured goods" in that context would include alumina produced in the State. Confidentiality obligations of the Revenue Commissioners preclude the disclosure of any information relating to the tax affairs of any person.

115.

asked the Minister for Industry, Commerce and Energy if he will state, in relation to the new Alcan development in County Limerick, (a) the total cost of the project; (b) the total amount of grants payable by the State or State agencies, such as the IDA, towards such cost; (c) the number of permanent jobs being provided; (d) the cost to the State per permanent job created; and (e) the total cost per job created.

: I would refer the Deputy to my reply to a question on 8 February 1978, as regards part (b) and (d) of his question. I am informed by the Industrial Development Authority that (a) the total estimated capital cost of the Aughinish Alumina Project is £280 million; (c) when the plant is operational in 1982 it is scheduled to provide 800 new permanent industrial jobs. In addition during the construction period 1978-82, employment will be provided for an average of 1,350 persons with 2,200 employed at peak of construction; and (e) the capital investment per permanent job to be provided by the project will be approximately £350,000.
