Vol. 307 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions . Oral Answers . - School Meals Scheme .

6.

asked the Minister for Economic Planning and Development the form which the review of the school meals scheme is taking, as outlined in the Green Paper, paragraph 7.13; if it is intended to drop this scheme; when the study will be completed; and whom it is proposed to consult in the course of the study.

: A review of the operation of the school meals scheme is being carried out by a working group set up by the Minister for Social Welfare. No decision has been taken by the Government to drop the scheme. The working group will complete their report as soon as possible and will have any consultations they consider relevant to their task. When the report is complete it will be submitted to the Minister for Social Welfare who will decide what further action will be taken.

: Is the Minister aware that the school attendance committees in Dublin and in other major urban areas have expressed their concern about the number of children going to school daily without proper meals? Would the Minister give the House a guarantee that that scheme, in areas where it is considered necessary will not be tampered with or dropped, regardless of economic considerations?

: I am aware of the reference the Deputy has made to reports of children arriving at school without meals. I have already answered the question.
