asked the Minister for Education if he will describe the system of appointment of teachers for community and comprehensive schools.

asked the Minister for Education if there is any obligation on the boards of management of community and comprehensive schools to advertise vacancies on the teaching staff; and, if so, if he will state these obligations.

asked the Minister for Education if any regulations have been formulated or imposed by his Department in relation to the appointment of teachers to community or comprehensive schools; and, if so, if he will state the regulations.

asked the Minister for Education if any directions or guidelines have been issued by his Department in relation to the appointment of teachers to vacancies in community and comprehensive schools; and, if so, if he will give details of these guidelines.

asked the Minister for Education the practice of community and comprehensive schools in relation to the appointment of teachers; and if he will describe that practice, and the details of the procedures adopted.

asked the Minister for Education the extent of departmental assessment over the interview and assessment procedure for the appointment of teachers to comprehensive and community schools.

: With the permission of the Ceann Comhairle I propose to take Questions Nos. 201 to 206, inclusive, together.

The general position in the matter of the making of appointments of teachers in comprehensive and community schools is governed by guidelines rather than by regulations or directions. As a general rule all vacancies are advertised. As the Deputy is aware, however, some teachers are assimilated to the staffs of these schools from former secondary or vocational schools. There is normally a selection board for the interview and assessment procedures and the Department is represented on the board by one of its inspectors.

asked the Minister for Education if there are minimum qualification requirements for art teachers for community and/or comprehensive schools; and, if so, if he will describe the minimum qualification requirements in each case.

asked the Minister for Education if there are minimum requirements in relation to competence in the Irish language for art teachers in community and/or comprehensive schools; and, if so, if he will specify these minimum requirements.

: With the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 207 and 208 together.

The usual qualification required for appointment as a teacher of art in a comprehensive or community school is the art teachers' certificate, or an approved equivalent qualification, together with an acceptable qualification in the Irish language normally An Cheard Teastas Gaeilge.

asked the Minister for Education if his Department has issued guidelines, directives or regulations in relation to the manner in which applicants for positions as teachers in community or comprehensive schools shall be rejected prior to interview, or the manner in which interviews and assessments of applicants for such positions are conducted.

: The Department do not intervene in regard to the manner in which arrangements are made by the boards of management of comprehensive and community schools for the short-listing of applicants for teaching posts or in regard to the interviewing and assessment of applicants.
