Vol. 307 No. 14

Written Answers . - Temporary Part-Time Posts .

115.

andMr. Mitchell asked the Minister for the Public Service the policy of his Department in relation to staff of the public service who may have been for years employed in temporary part-time posts; and if he will give an estimate of the numbers so employed.

: As far as the civil service is concerned, my policy would be to provide opportunities of permanent and whole-time employment where the volume and nature of the work permit this.

There are an estimated 1,350 civil servants with service in the region of two years or more who would be classed as temporary and part-time. The majority of these are assured of continuity of employment, but the number of hours work available for each of them is relatively small.

Policy in relation to other areas of the public service would, in the first instance, be a matter for the Ministers immediately concerned.
