asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he will state, as of the latest available date, the number of persons on the live register who are in receipt of no payment whatsoever.

: The number of persons on the live register in the week ended 16 June 1978 who were not in receipt of unemployment benefit or unemployment assistance was 13,734. This figure is composed of 6,117 persons who were not claiming unemployment benefit or assistance but who were signing for credits in order to maintain their social insurance records, and 7,617 persons whose claims for unemployment benefit or assistance were in the course of being processed.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare the total number of child dependants of persons on the live register, as of the latest available date.

: On the basis of the latest information available from the Central Statistics Office, which relates to January 1978, the number of child dependants of recipients of unemployment benefit and unemployment assistance on the live register was as follows:

Unemployment benefit

49,760 children

Unemployment assistance

62,141 children

making a total of

111,901 children

The live register also includes persons signing for credits and claimants awaiting decisions on their claims. Statistics are not kept of the number of child dependants of those categories.
