Vol. 307 No. 14

Written Answers . - Pig Production .

35.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if his Department have any special plans to encourage smaller farmers into pig production.

: I am satisfied that pig production continues to be an attractive enterprise for smaller farmers and that there is adequate encouragement for those wishing to enter the industry. Market prices here for pigs have been stable for some time past due mainly to a sound home market for pigmeat.

Grants for investment in pig production are, of course, available under the farm modernisation scheme and, while certain limitations apply, these are intended only to ensure that there is a minimum commitment to pig production and that factory-type production is not encouraged.
