Vol. 307 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions . Oral Answers . - County Cork Harbour Improvements .

3.

asked the Minister for Fisheries the harbours selected for improvement work in south-west Cork this year; and the amount of money allocated in each case.

: My Department have requested the Office of Public Works to have improvement works carried out in south-west Cork at Castletownbere and Oileán na gCaorach, Bere Island, this year. The estimated expenditure in each case is £526,000 and £15,000 respectively.

: Are there only two locations in south-west Cork selected for works this year, Bere Island and Castletownbere?

: No. I am only talking about the actual expenditure in the current year. I can go through a number of other areas where we have proposals in train: Schull, Travarra, Glengarriff and Garnish Pier at Dursey. I can give the Deputy details of the proposals in each of these areas which are at an advanced stage of preparation.

: Is no money allocated towards the execution of the other works this year?

: In regard to Dursey, the Office of Public Works report was received on 29 March 1976 and a boring survey took place on 2 June 1978. The Department requested sanction for an Exchequer grant of £15,000 for the purpose of carrying out a survey in regard to that.

: What is the position in regard to Schull and Travarra?

: In regard to Schull, the Office of Public Works report on the boring survey was received on 14 April of this year. The inspector and engineers recommend that Department of Finance sanction be sought for making an Exchequer grant towards the cost, estimated at £380,000, of extending the pier by 200 feet and related works.
