asked the Minister for the Environment the number of SDA loans paid by local authorities and his Department in 1975, 1976, 1977 and in the first nine months of 1978; the average amount of such loans for each period and the current number of applications awaiting approval in his Department.

The approval and payment of these loans are primarily matters for the local authorities concerned. The numbers of loans paid in 1975, 1976, 1977 and in the first six months of 1978 were 10,001, 6,732, 4,759 and 2,440 respectively. The average loans approved in these periods were £4,156, £4,080, £5,108 and £6,253 respectively. The number of applications awaiting approval at 30 June 1978 was 3,160. Figures for the third quarter of 1978 are not yet available.

asked the Minister for the Environment the total amount of State moneys expended on SDA loans in 1975, 1976, 1977 and in the first nine months of 1978; the total amount provided in the 1978 Budget for such loans; and the amount of additional moneys provided during 1978 by the Government for such loans.

Total expenditure by local authorities on house purchase loans in 1975, 1976 and 1977 was £42.058 million, £25.327 million and £16.884 million respectively.

Figures are not yet available for the first nine months of 1978. Expenditure up to 30 June last was £12.491 million.

Thirty nine million pounds was provided in the 1978 Budget; no additional moneys were provided during the year as it was considered that the budget provision would be adequate to meet the requirements of the scheme.
