asked the Minister for Labour the amount of moneys provided in the 1978 Budget under the £5 per worker employment maintenance scheme for the textiles, clothing, footwear and tanning industries for assistance to each of these industries; the number of employees concerned in each sector and the total amount of State moneys expended to date by the Government on this scheme.

A sum of £5 million was provided in this year's budget in respect of the scheme referred to for the period 3 April 1978 to 31 December 1978.

Claims have been approved in respect of:— 15,482 workers in the clothing industry; 3,013 workers in the footwear industry; 179 workers in the tanning industry; 7,836 workers in the textiles industry.

A total amount of £1,346,352 has been paid up to and including 9 October 1978 in respect of the quarter ended 30 June.
