Vol. 308 No. 1

Written Answers. - Conditions of Schools in North-West.

501.

asked the Minister for Education if his attention has been drawn to a survey carried out by the North Western Health Board which shows that 21 per cent of schools examined are in poor repair, two have no cloakrooms, 43 have no school yard, and that 119 out of 220 inspected have no playing fields; and the steps he proposes to take to have the matter corrected.

A summary of results of a survey of Hygiene standards in schools in Counties Donegal, Sligo and Leitrim, prepared by the North Western Health Board, has been furnished to my Department. The summary does not identify the particular schools in question. It is assumed, however, that the health board have reported directly to the individual management authorities concerned.

Any applications received from the management authorities for grants towards the cost of necessary improvements will be sympathetically considered. The repair and maintenance of schools and the provision of playing fields is, however, primarily a local responsibility.
