Vol. 308 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Phoenix Park Amenities.

19.

asked the Minister for Finance the proposals that exist for recreational improvements by the provision of amenities for the public in the Phoenix Park, Dublin; and when extra facilities, such as tennis courts, and other amenities will be provided.

The Phoenix Park at present caters for a wide range of sporting and recreational activities. Over the years various interests have suggested the introduction into the park of further exclusive sporting facilities and if these were acceded to the general public would be excluded from further large areas of the park and the character of the park would be greatly altered.

Successive administrations have accepted that no further areas should be allocated for the exclusive use of any group or club. I am satisfied that this is the right policy and that it conforms with the general attitude of the public towards the park.

The Minister of State has not accurately read the question. I have not referred to exclusive use by any group or organisation. I asked if the Government have any proposals for improving existing recreational facilities.

We have approximately 200 acres of land which is known as the Inchicore North Estate of the Phoenix Park. I am considering providing other facilities in that area.

When will a decision be made?

As soon as possible.

Can the Minister of State give us a date?

A report will be put before me very soon.

The Minister of State's predecessor, the late Deputy Noel Lemass, spoke about this plan eight years ago and now the Minister of State tells us there is going to be no delay. Can the Minister of State give us a date for the development of the Inchicore North Estate.

I am very much aware of the development taking place at present and I am very cautious about any kind of development in the park. The Deputy knows that some years ago there was a question of a golf course and very strong representations with which I fully agree were made by the people of Dublin and the proposal was rejected. So, let us develop the park ensuring that it will be maintained for the benefit of the people of Dublin.

(Cavan-Monaghan): Will the Minister agree that if the alleged policy of his colleague, the Minister of State at the Department of Education, in regard to sport for all is to be taken seriously, he should provide the amenities asked for in this question as a matter of urgency and not put them on the long finger as he appears to be doing?

That is a separate question.

(Cavan-Monaghan): It is not.

Sports facilities are the responsibility of the local authority.

Would the Minister not consider putting the Phoenix Park and the proposed Phoenix Park extension under the control of Dublin Corporation which has shown——

Surely that is a separate question.

It arises out of the question.

The Deputy should put down a separate question.

Perhaps the Minister would consider the suggestion.
