Vol. 308 No. 3

Written Answers. - Telephone Service.

484.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will investigate why a person (details supplied) in County Cork, who applied for a telephone over three years ago has not been facilitated; and when a telephone is likely to be provided.

The application could not be dealt with because of the volume of engineering works on hands in the area and because of a shortage of equipment in the local exchange. The telephone will be provided when installation of a new exchange at Coachford, work on which has been in progress for some time, is completed early next year.

485.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he has received complaints about the phone service in Kells area, County Meath; and if he has any proposals to improve the service pending the completion of an automatic exchange.

The answer to the first part of the question is "Yes". Additional switchboards will be installed in the exchange in the first quarter of next year and the exchange will also be relieved shortly of handling certain traffic from one of its major dependent exchanges. Both of these measures should improve substantially the service in the Kells area.

486.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs when a person in Dublin (details supplied) will be provided with a telephone service.

It is expected that service will be provided in about a year's time.

487.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs (a) the number and (b) the percentage of the total number of outstanding applications for telephone service which are accounted for by (i) business and (ii) private applicants.
