A revised essential repairs State grant of £300, or half the estimated cost of the work whichever is the less, was announced on 18 August 1978. Local authorities are empowered to pay the whole or part of the balance of the estimated cost, either in cash or by contributing materials and/or labour. The new maximum State grant is a considerable improvement on the former maximum of £80.
