asked the Minister for the Environment if he is aware of the many defects in the houses at Talbot Green, Wexford; and, if so, when the necessary reconstruction and repairs will be carried out.

I am fully informed about the condition of these houses from special inspections made by officers of my Department and from reports submitted to me by Wexford Corporation. I have informed the corporation that the rectification of defects arising from the performance of the building contract is a matter for settlement between the parties concerned in accordance with the contract, and that it is up to the council to put right any defects arising from lack of normal maintenance. I have agreed as an exceptional measure to allow the cost of providing doors between the kitchens and the fuel stores in these houses to be charged against the capital cost of the scheme.
I have informed the corporation, however, that the financing of other works of general improvement to these houses must be considered in the context of the financing of improvements to existing local authority dwellings generally.
I am not in a position to say when these works of general improvement will be carried out. I assume that the corporation will ensure that the defects arising under the contract or from lack of normal maintenance will be remedied as quickly as possible.
